    Rachel & Mike Toyn

We are in our mid-fifties and live in the Lake District. We bought our first tandem a few years ago, hoping it would be an enjoyable way to spend time together once our children left home. Luckily, we both absolutely loved it!

Mike grew up in Eskdale and did his first cycle tour with his Dad when he was 8 years old. He has been into mountain biking since it became a thing. Mike loves porridge, problem solving and pushing a heavily laden tandem through unrideable terrain, all of which make him perfectly qualified for cycle touring.

Rachel was born in Zambia and explored the African bush from a young age. On moving to the UK as a teenager she embraced camping in a rather colder climate. Rachel loves the quirky side of life and is an expert at capturing this by camera from the back of the tandem.

Event Details

Rachel and Mike Toyn take a 10-month journey from Vancouver to Ecuador by tandem bicycle. In 2023, they reached a good point to take a break from their everyday routine. They decided they would visit their son in Vancouver and set off cycling south from there. They did a few Spanish lessons, quit their jobs, packed up their house for renting and set off without much of a plan.
